Chapter Seventeen
Christian was sitting in the interview room, cuffed. He felt as if he was in a bad dream. He felt absolutely no remorse over what he had done â he had actually quite enjoyed it. He enjoyed the power and he was proud of his own bravery. The only thing niggling away at him was how Susan was going to react. She was going to know how much of a bad man he was now and he didnât like the idea of that. He hated the thought of all their friends telling her she had dodged a bullet and how none of them had ever suspected he could be capable of something like that.
As far as the kids were concerned, he could kiss goodbye to having a relationship with them. He was going to be in prison for many years now. He could cope with the kid element. He wasnât a great father anyway. He was always away on business and they appreciated him even less than his wife did. She would take care of them in the house that he had provided, in the lifestyle that he had provided. He had enough savings to keep them going for a few years. He sighed as his mind tried to clean up the mess he had made. Then the police entered the room.
âWhen can I speak to Susan? I need to speak to her now.â
The two officers looked at each other awkwardly before taking their seats and starting the tape to record the interview, each giving their names for the tape.
âMr Jones, Christian, can you talk us through the events that led up to you going to Sara Edgertonâs house this evening?â
âThere were no events leading up to it. We used to date and I was upset and I think itâs pretty fucking obvious that I lost control. I have lost my mind. She had been tormenting me for months. She drove me to it.â
âDrove you to what?â
âTo fucking stabbing her with a screwdriver.â
Once again, the police officers looked at each other, frowning, and then back at Christian.
âChristian, just to clarify, you are saying that you stabbed Sara Edgerton with a screwdriver today.â
Christian looked at them, confused, and wondered if they were trying to trip him up but he knew that couldnât be so as he had been caught red-handed and admitted everything. He leaned across the desk with his hands cupped and said: âYes. You know I did. You caught me. You were there.â
âMr Jones, the woman you fatally stabbed with a screwdriver was not Sara Edgerton.â
Christian sat upright immediately. âWhat?â The colour drained from his face. âThen who?â
âMr Jones, the woman you stabbed this evening in the neck with a screwdriver has been identified as a Mrs Susan Jones.â
Christian stared at both of them in disbelief, lost for words. He felt as if the floor had disappeared from beneath him as he continued to gaze at them in horror.
George was still in the family room, waiting for news. The dusty-pink-painted walls and the dim lamp made him feel tired.
